Internet search engines virtually always create a ranking of all pages, and then they choose only those pages that contain the right words. A new approach that yields more relevant hits and faster search engines is also been designed. The goal of all search engines is to attain the most relevant responses as quickly as possible. When search engines calculate their search results, they are steered by an algorithm that assigns higher or lower values to features of Web pages. The most common search engines on the Net, such as Google, generate a gigantic single ranking based on a search of all pages available on the Net.The algorithm will rank pages, instead of each rele   ...

The world of technology is evolving with the rapid speed and so are the needs of the user. So, keeping these things in mind along with the popularity of fast internet connections that are virtually always on has enabled software vendors to embed automated update mechanisms into many desktop programs. Though some users may find these updates cumbersome, most have come to accept the daily routine of updating their antivirus software and periodically installing critical Windows updates. However, the generalization of automated software updates may ultimately create security issues for organizations. Who knows what updates are being pushed to user desktops and how they a   ...

Quantum cryptography, a completely secure means of communication, is much closer to being used practically as researchers have now developed high speed detectors capable of receiving information with much higher key rates, thereby able to receive more information faster. New research details how quantum communication can be made possible without having to use cryogenic cooling and/or complicated optical setups, making it much more likely to become commercially viable soon. One of the first practical applications to emerge from advances in the often baffling study of quantum mechanics, quantum cryptography has become the soon-to-be-reached gold standard in secure comm   ...

Viruses and malware are the bitter truth of the computer world and many people keep on working to resolve these problems. There are only two ways to remove malicious software from an infected Windows machine: with the infected operating system running or not.The easy way, of course, is from within the infected copy of Windows. Just download anti-malware software, install it, run it and get on with your life. The problem is, this may not work.Much of today’s malicious software features very technically sophisticated defenses against detection. Recently researchers at the University of California at Santa Barbara took control of the Torpig botnet and wrote a pap   ...

NTFS and FAT32 are the two formats available while installing Windows XP, this is the information a computer rookie have. Though the fact goes much deeper than that this article gives a general overview of both of these formats along with the advantages and disadvantages.FAT gets its name from the use of a kind of database called a File Allocation Table that contains an entry for each cluster on the disk. The FAT system has been in use by Microsoft since before DOS 1 (the first version was devised by a teenager named Bill Gates) and has undergone several revisions. There are versions called FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32. The numbers refer to the number of bits used for th   ...

The period of recession is all over the world and that is the main cause for the raise in the statistics of unemployment. One field that is thriving is computer forensics which is, essentially, the discovery of data on electronic devices. A computer forensics analyst can have a lucrative and rewarding career involving many areas. All you need to Many people think that just because you delete something off of your computer, or other device, that it's gone forever. Much more than most companies, Intel's success depends on the technology that will arrive in its field years hence. As a result, the company has more than 1,000 researchers beavering away to gauge and develop that technology. At its Intel Research Day at the Computer History Museum here Thursday, the company touted a wide range of projects that extend beyond the company's core business of making computer processors. Microsoft may be ruing the day that it launched XP --- the operating system has proved so stable and durable that it appears Microsoft may now be forced to allow it to be sold on new PCs until April, 2010. Can anything short of a nuclear weapons kill this version of Windows?I've previously said that Windows 7 will be the XP killer, because beta versions of Windows 7 are stable and fast, and will be able to run on netbooks. But the latest news from Microsoft makes it appear that even when Windows 7 ships, XP will stay alive and kicking, even on new PCs.Computerworld cites reports that say XP will be offered as "downgrade" on new PCs not only from Vista,   ...

Forty years ago this summer, a programmer sat down and knocked out in one month what would become one of the most important pieces of software ever created. In August 1969, Ken Thompson, a programmer at AT&T subsidiary Bell Laboratories, saw the month-long departure of his wife and young son as an opportunity to put his ideas for a new operating system into practice. He wrote the first version of Unix in assembly language for a wimpy Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) PDP-7 minicomputer, spending one week each on the operating system, a shell, an editor and an assembler.Thompson and a colleague, Dennis Ritchie, had been feeling adrift since Bell Labs had withdrawn ear   ...
