Thapar University was established with collaboration between the State of Patiala and East Punjab State Union, the Central government and the Patiala Technical Education Trust. A premier 50 year old Deemed University of higher education and is accredited for all its programme by NBA (AICTE), NAAC (UGC) and also ISO 9001:2000 certified. With almost all specialization offered by UG, PG and doctoral level and is duly recognized by the central agencies i.e UGC, AICTE, DST, and DBT for funding research projects.

The MCA degree programme is divided over a period of three years consisting of six semesters. The students study courses for five semesters at the University and do a Software Development Project (SDP) in the sixth semester in well-known national and multi-national companies like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, DCM, Cadence and Hughes. There are 120 seats in the programme and a minimum of 3 years duration in any degree of discipline with mathematics as one of the subjects to be conducted by the university.
