| Life of a Freshie
|
| | | | When I look back, it doesn't seem as if it's been just a year. In fact it already feels as if I have had this life long relationship with IIT Delhi. Well I think that should give you an idea of the amount of fun I have had in IIT!
Right from initial orientation and counseling by the professors to the ''fundas'' of Seniors; from bunking classes to the minors and majors and from the fun of the extra currics to the fierce inter-hostel competition and Poltu... it's been one hell of an experience! | | | The year started on a somber note with a week of counselling by various Boards in IIT and professors and even the NRCVEE(National Resource Council for Value Education Engineering) and got me all fired up. I was sure I was going to maintain a 9+ CGPA, rock all the extra currics and in general create a lot of 'awesomeness'! But then the real thing started. After the protection of the first week, the casual ragging (I call it casual because it was all a part of daily chores. Not as if we were specially called for ragging). Running errands for seniors, doing stuff for hostel, getting valuable lectures from 'Stud' seniors and it all changed. The viewpoint which had so far been localized to extremely short term material gains slowly changed into a much more broad prospective which sought to encompass a lot more than just grades(but that too!). I mean, frankly, I found the so called 'ragging' pretty fun because of the amount I learnt from it. When you are belittled by a guy 4 yrs senior to you, who has seen a lot more of life than you, it does become a valuable learning curve! Whether it is learning from his experiences or his insights on the 'system' or the general ''beizzati'' he does.... it teaches you a lot. | | | | | Post ragging we were greeted by the magic of 'Rendezvous' 2009-The annual cultural fest of IIT. Shivalik-my hostel- was the chief organizer so I being a fresher had a lot of work to do - be it the decorations, infrastructure or handling bills. All the ground level work was done by freshers. But then the rewards were there too in the form of passes for the various events. And though according to our seniors the actual Rendezvous was nothing compared to the past record, I had a lot of fun. Apart from the conventional Pro Nite, Rock Nite etc we also had Paintball, Rock Climbing and a number of other attractions. All in all it was a pretty fun time! | | | | | Also, riddled here and there throughout the year were various extra currics like Debates and Quizzes, Plays, Workshops etc. So basically a large amount of my time was spent in preparing for my extra currics, helping out for Rendezvous, playing sports for the hostel etc. Parhai Sharhai toh bas!!! The two minors were just before and just after the rendezvous and passed in a daze. In fact that was the only time I actually studied sincerely! And the minors were a new experience too! No preparatory holidays. Classes continued upto the very day of the minors and resumed from the very next day. As the Director put it... ''You need to get over the fact that exams are something other than normal classes!'' | | | Anyways, things really picked up pace after the second Minors. With Rendezvous behind us and Majors looming large everyone started studying. Even the professors tried to finish off their syllabi. Surprise quizzes peaked as all professors who had promised 5 surprise quizzes throughout the sem took 3 on the same day! And before I knew it I was facing my first major!
Well, like all things, that too passed! I managed a decent atthi and was kind of happy with my efforts!
The winter break saw the Inter IIT sports being organized in Madras. Many freshers got selected into the teams. That is one more thing I like here. Total transparency. No bias whatsoever. | | Well then the second sem started. But this time emphasis was not so much on extra currics as it was on politics. With elections in March, everyone started playing games. Suddenly seniors became extra nice. More treats were held and a large number of people herefore invisible started surfacing and –working hard' for the hostel! Well the election season was fun too! Right from Class Representatives to Club Representatives and Secys and General Secys. Every post was decided by a closed ballot. | | | And then of course there were the post election treats! But then it was all quiet. With no extra currics and politics also over, April was a majorly academic time for me. But then came our house day where we gave an informal farewell to our seniors and competed with all other hostels for the best organized program. And so once again before I knew it, it was Major time! But this time I was better prepared and had studied beforehand. So although I couldn't improve my CGPA, it didn't fall either which was a good thing!
Apart from this the second semester also saw the Tryst being organized but it failed to live upto its expectations. In fact it was majorly overshadowed by elections which were on about that time. The only other notable features of the second semester were the International Parliamentary Debate and the Literary fest of the BSP. | | | | | | All said and done, today as I look back and enjoy my last few days of ''facchadom'' I realize that first year is actually the best part of college. Everyone treats you as a kid. Seniors too are obliged to give you random treats. You do anything wrong and you are pardoned on the pretext ''baccha hai''. In fact there are no worries at all! But then I guess being a senior has its advantages too! Well I'll see... | | | | | View Gallery. | read user comments!
