BIT Mesra is a deemed university under Sec. 3 of the U.G.C. act 1986 and functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a high power Board of Governors, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Mr. G.P Birla, the chairman of the board of governors and the Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the chancellor of the institute.

The institute has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) established by the UGC and AICTE respectively. Admissions to MCA programme of Birla Institute of Technology at its centers in Allahabad, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lalpur and Noida is done on the basis of the performance of the candidates in BIT Mesra MCA entrance test.
